The KPB has chosen its official dates of celebration to be January 3, 2009 thru January 3, 2010. Our kick-off event will be a bonfire event in which eight bonfires will be lit simultaneously across the KPB, forming the North Star and Big Dipper as seen on Alaska’s flag. These fires will be large – 50’ across – so that a passing satellite can photograph the event with photos being made available for gifts to visiting dignitaries, postcards, as well as other uses.

Some events have already taken place because various areas of the state are celebrating at various times. Alaska kicked of its celebration as of January 3, 2008, while some cities began with July 4, 2008 or other specific dates, and some are joining us in the 2009-2010 time period.

Dates with specific events to celebrate
  • May 28, 1958 – The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Alaska Statehood Bill by a vote of 208 to 166.
  • July 7, 1958 – President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Alaska Statehood Bill into law.
  • January 3, 1959 – President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the proclamation admitting Alaska to the U.S. a “moment after the stroke of noon.”
